Kenya: Tear gas fired as opposition demo continues in Nairobi

16.10.2017
Police deployed tear gas at opposition protesters who were marching in Nairobi on Monday. The demonstration comes only days after their leader withdrew from the rerun of the presidential election, as ordered by the country's Supreme Court.
One opposition protester argued that that the ruling Jubilee Party of Kenya "has distinguished itself as a regime of terror and blood, and today we've come specifically to show them or to confront that mentality."
Last week, opposition leader Raila Odinga, of Kenya's National Super Alliance (NASA), announced that he would withdraw his candidacy from the rerun of the election, noting that his party had come to the conclusion that the election commission would not be able to "ensure that the illegalities and irregularities that led to the invalidation of 8 August do not happen again."
The August election, in which the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta won with 54 percent of votes, was annulled and rendered invalid by the country's court after Kenya's opposition challenged the results of vote-rigging.
The rerun of the Kenyan presidential election is set for 26 October.
