Hundreds of people took part in a sit-in protest against the Bahraini government's decision to strip a top Shia cleric, Isa Qassim, of his citizenship, outside his house in Diraz, Monday.
Participants stayed overnight to show their support for Isa Qassim, who backed mass protests for greater civil and political rights. The Bahraini government accused Qassim of using his status as a cleric for his own agenda. An interior ministry statement said he used the position to "serve foreign interests" and promote "sectarianism and violence."
Lebanese Shia group Hezbullah has warned of the consequences of the decision and Iran's revolutionary guards issued a warning of armed resistance to Bahrain's rulers.
