An investigation is underway in Ferguson into the shooting of two police officers that took place Wednesday night during a protest following the resignation of the city police chief Tom Jackson. The shots were fired during a protest staged at the police headquarters hours after the resignation was announced which came on the tails of a damning report from the Department of Justice documenting racial bias in the Ferguson police department and court system.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said during a press briefing on Thursday that identifying the shooter or shooters is the department's "No. 1 priority," but said that no suspects have been taken into custody. The two officers suffered serious injuries, though none are life-threatening and both officers were released from the hospital on Thursday morning. Belmar said at a press briefing that what began as a peaceful protest, turned ugly.
