Oil Spill Shouldn't Ruin Your California Beach Vacation Plans

The California coast is a popular destination come summertime, and officials don't want a silly oil spill to scare tourists away this Memorial Day weekend.
While images of sticky black California beaches pervade the media, only travelers who had plans at two state beaches — Refugio and El Capitan — should actually have to change their plans. Those beaches were in the direct path of Tuesday's spill, which officials estimate at 105,000 gallons of crude, 21,000 of which is believed to have made it to open water.
The tourism group Visit Santa Barbara is spreading the word that almost all of the area, including every hotel and resort, is open for business, spokeswoman Karna Hughes said Thursday.
