Thousands of people attended the funeral of murdered human rights activist Berta Caceres in her hometown of La Esperanza, Saturday.
Caceres was gunned down in La Esperanza during an attempted robbery, according to the local authorities. However, Caceres family believe that the activist was murdered as a punishment for her campaigning against dams, plantation owners and illegal lumberjacks. Her death came just a week after she was purportedly threatened for voicing opposition to the construction of a new hydroelectric plant.
Caceres was the co-founder of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH). In 2015 she won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her anti-hydroelectric campaign.
