Russian experts of the International Mine Action Centre found a large cache of ammunition in Palmyra on Friday, which reportedly belonged to the so-called Islamic State (IS/ formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The warehouse was well hidden and was discovered with the use of special equipment delivered by the Russian engineers to Syria.
The discovery of the cache was a detected as part of the Russian sapping operation, which has already identified 12,000 explosive objects, including mines for large-caliber mortar guns as well as anti-tank mines.
The mine clearance operation in Palmyra started after Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and the Head of UNESCO Irina Bokova agreed that Russian servicemen will take part in the clearance of the city and the surrounding area, where the world heritage site is located.
