The city of Townsville in Queensland has been hit by severe flooding after record rainfall forced authorities to open the floodgates of the Ross River Dam on Monday.
The unprecedented rainfall, an average of 1.16 meters (3.8 feet) in a span of seven days, reportedly caused officials to open the dam to prevent the river from breaking its banks.
Emergency and military personnel were dispatched to deliver sandbags and assist residents of almost 2,000 homes forced to evacuate in the wake of flooding.
Authorities have warned locals of crocodiles and snakes roaming in the flooded streets.
