France: Hundreds denounce violence against women in Paris
1
26.11.2016
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Paris, Friday, to denounce gender-based violence. The march took off at Place de la Bastille and ended with a peaceful rally at Place de la Republique. The rally was organised by activists to co-incide with the National day against violence against women.
Protesters were chanting slogans against increasing violence and holding banners demanding to stop feminicide and hatred. Activists also demanded the release of Jaqueline Sauvage who was sentenced to ten years for killing her husband, who had allegedly beaten her and raped his daughters repeatedly for years.
After numerous protests led by feminist associations, including Femen, the French President Francois Hollande decided to partially pardon Sauvage, enabling her to apply for parole immediately. However the court of Melun rejected the appeal on August 12 and the Paris Appeal Court also refused to adjust her sentence on November 24.
