Thousands of fast-food workers marched through central Los Angeles, Wednesday, as protesters throughout the country called for a raise to a minimum $15-an-hour (€14.05) wage in the food industry. The large group, organised by the Service Employees International Union, shut down traffic on Figueroa Street, later attempting to march on University of Southern California campus. Participants bore banners and balloons daubed with the message 'Fight for 15' in reference to the desired figure. The protest comes as Los Angeles city and county are considering legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15-an-hour (€14.05). McDonald's reportedly told employees that it would raise starting salaries around the country to $1 over the local minimum wage, but the plan, only applicable to at company-owned outlets, will apply to about 10 percent of the more than 14,300 McDonald's locations.
