US National Security Advisor John Bolton skirted around a question about the future deployment of American missiles in Europe following the United States' withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, at a press conference held upon the conclusion of his two-day visit to Russia in Moscow on Tuesday.
"I think it was important from our perspective, as President Trump said on Saturday and said yesterday, to deal with the questions of Russian violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty," Bolton explained.
"It is the position that Russia doesn't agree with, which we feel very strongly about and it was our major factor in the decision to withdraw," he continued.
"The problem is that there are Russian INF missiles in Europe now. The threat is not American withdraw from the INF Treaty. The threat is the Russian missiles already deployed," the national security advisor clarified.
During his visit, Bolton met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Bolton's trip comes days after US President Donald Trump announced his country's exit from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia first signed in 1987.
