Protests erupted across Iran on Saturday, after the government announced a 50 per cent hike in petrol prices and introduced fuel rationing.
Demonstrators set up burning barricades in the cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr. Traffic was also held up by protests in public squares.
One person was reportedly killed during protests in the central city of Sirjan and another in the city of Behbahan.
On Friday, petrol prices subsidised by the Islamic republic increased to 15,000 Rials ($0.35; €0.32) per litre for the first 60 litres of petrol bought each month with each additional litre costing 30,000 Rials ($0.71; €0.64).
The government said that the income generated from the reform would help to purchase basic goods and medicines, pay pensions and employees of state-owned institutions, easing the burden of US sanctions on the national economy.
