Drone footage of Palmyra's ancient remains emerged on Wednesday, following the Syrian Arab Army's (SAA) reported recapture of the nearby city of Palmyra from the hands of the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ ISIL) on Sunday.
Initial expert analysis reportedly reveals deliberate neglect and significant destruction of unique remains, monuments and objects at the UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite the destruction, experts claim that the damage to the main part of the site is not beyond repair and restoration.
Reports from Syria indicate that prominent landmarks such as the city's famous columns and the Roman-era amphitheatre are mainly intact, unlike the 2000 year-old Temple of Bel which is reportedly flattened with the use of explosives.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Head of UNESCO Irina Bokova and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have agreed on the deployment of Russian crews to conduct mine clearance prior to archaeologists' mission to restore the ancient site to its previous condition.
The city of Palmyra has recently been the site of intense combat between the Syrian Arab Army and opposition militias. The Russian Air Force assisted the SAA in its campaign to re-take the city. The ancient site located nearby has earned the south-central Syrian city the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
