27.01.2016
Twenty-two crew members were rescued by Spanish search & rescue helicopters from a cargo vessel, 238 kilometers (148 miles) from Cape Ortegal, northern Spain on Wednesday.
In the midst of a severe storm, the 34,000 tonne Panama-flagged 'Modern Express' sent an SOS signal announcing that it had lost part of its cargo and had a heel of 25 degrees, which had threatened to become 40, with a high risk of capsizing. The SOS was received by a vessel sailing close to La Coruna.
Footage shows helicopter teams rescuing the crew, who were safely transported to Santander and Celeiro Heliport by helicopter.
The French Navy rushed to the site to prevent the vessel from capsizing. The operation to secure the ship is reportedly still underway.
