SOT, Nicola Zingaretti, Democratic Party leader (Italian): "Not a government at any cost. What's necessary is a breakthrough government, an alternative to the right, with a new program, solid, built on a broad parliamentary base and that can give hope back to the Italian people. Of course, if these conditions are not in place... As we told president Mattarella, we need to be sure that all these conditions are in place. The natural outcome of this crisis is a new early election for which the Democratic Party is ready."

SOT, Silvio Berlusconi, Forza Party leader (Italian): "After a lot of adventurism the country needs a stable government, a solid government with a coherent program and with strong democratic legitimacy. There is a need to address the problems of the Italians. We need an authoritative executive which restores respectability on the European and international levels that Italy currently doesn't have."

SOT, Silvio Berlusconi, Forza Party leader (Italian): "To be able to realise all this it is needed to have a centre-right majority in parliament that corresponds to the sentiment of the Italians. If this is not possible there is only one way out - early elections."

Italian president Sergio Mattarella met with leaders of political parties on Thursday to discuss if a new coalition government can be formed after prime minister Giuseppe Conte resigned on Tuesday. Footage shows the leader of the Democratic Party Nicola Zingaretti and Forza Italia leader Sylvio Berlusconi arriving for consultations and making statements to the media.
"What's necessary is a breakthrough government, an alternative to the right, with a new program, solid, built on a broad parliamentary base and that can give hope back to the Italian people," said the Democratic Party leader.
Berlusconi said the two options are preferable at this point. "It is needed to have a centre-right majority in parliament that corresponds to the sentiment of the Italian. If this is not possible there is only one way out - early elections," said the Forza Party leader.
