Two former high-ranked CIA officials Ray McGovern and Elizabeth Murray held a press conference in Berlin, on Wednesday. McGovern talked about NATO, Ukraine and the refugee crisis with specific reference to Syria and Iraq. McGovern talked about February 23, 2014 – the day that former interim Ukrainian President Oleksander Tuchynov replaced ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, calling it a "coup d’etat." He emphasised his opinion regarding the role of the US investment in Ukraine of $5 billion (€ 4.4 billion). "The coup d'etat was presided by how many billion dollars to help Ukrainians' aspirations to join the West? How many? Five," he said, before moving on to draw the audience’s attention to the fact that Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland "bragged" about it. According to McGovern, NATO made a decision during a 2008 summit in Bucharest that "Ukraine and Georgia will become members of NATO." But "they were still in the mind set of Wolfowitz, who said 'the Russians won't stop us.’ Well, people talk about Ukraine being Russia’s backyard - that is wrong. It's Russia’s front yard, folks! It's their front yard. And if the people in Washington and London thought that they could do this with Putin just sitting back and without doing anything, they were really poorly advised. So 'no' means 'no'. And just finishing by saying, this was one regime change to many," he said. McGovern also blamed the USA for millions of refugees fleeing from war and poverty in Iraq before noting the fact that Syria has also been “destroyed” by war. "Why these refugees are here? That is dangerous because we might talk about how the United States attacked Iraq and destroyed that country, he said. He quantified this in terms of numbers. “Four million, four million refugees from Iraq. Two million had to leave their homes and stay in Iraq, two million in the surrounding countries. Syria, again four million," he added. McGovern also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s role in “having all the Syrian chemical weapons destroyed,” before positing his observation that this is not found in the press "much." The conference was organised with the assistance of the co-founder of "Stopp Ramstein" campaign Anne Kowalke.
