The number of people seeking asylum in Germany dropped in 2018, German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said at a Federal Press Conference (BPK) in Berlin on Wednesday.
Presenting the 2018 asylum report, Seehofer said that the government met its target to limit the number of asylum seekers to a yearly maximum of no more than 180,000 to 220,000, with around 162,000 asylum applications coming from first-time applicants.
The German Interior Minister argued that the decline in migration demonstrates that restrictive migration measures, which had been implemented following the refugee crisis, were effective.
He said, "This shows that we clearly managed to limit the number of asylum seekers to between 180,000 and 220,000 a year, which shows that the political decision made in the past has the desired effects."
