Hundreds of protesters joined a march organised by "The platform of Democratic Organisations in the Netherlands" against "the war by the Turkish state against the Kurds," in Amsterdam, Sunday.
The protesters marched through downtown Amsterdam with Kurdish flags and signs condemning the alleged "crimes by the Turkish government against Kurdish activists." According to an organiser of the protest, the Turkish government is not only oppressing the Kurdish minority in Turkey, but has supported the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) for the past three years.
Turkish security forces have launched a large-scale security operation in south-eastern Turkey, which began on December 14 and has involved the imposition of curfews, aerial bombing, and mass detention in areas of unrest. Turkey claims it has killed at least 173 members of the outlawed PKK since July, but human rights groups claim that at least 100 civilians have died in the fighting during the same period.
