One of Russia's greatest artefacts, the mysterious Shigir Idol was being viewed in a new light in Yekaterinburg, Thursday, after recent scientific studies dated the figurine as being much older than formerly thought. New tests by German scientists on the wooden idol, known as the Big Shigir, revealed that the idol is potentially 11,000-years-old, making it 1,500-years older than previously believed. Minister of Culture for Russia's Sverdlov Region Pavel Krekov noted that these results could lead the Sverdlovsk Regional History Museum to "international recognition" and prestige, potentially bringing in more funding and research opportunities. The idol, discovered in a Russian peat bog in 1890s, is made of solid split logs of Siberian Larch. By comparison, the haunting Russian sculpture with its 11,000 years of age, is more than twice as old as the Egyptian pyramids.
