New Zealand: TPP trade deal signed by world leaders
7
04.02.2016
The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement was signed by ministers from the twelve participating countries during a ceremony hosted by New Zealand's government in Auckland on Thursday.
The TPP is a trade agreement concerning the economic policy of several Pacific Rim countries. It covers trade tariffs, intellectual property and environmental law.
The Trans Pacific Partnership has triggered global opposition in recent months, especially due to the intellectual property chapter on topics such as drug patent security and digital data protection. Protesters say TPP is anti-democratic and favours multinational corporations at the expense of domestic interests. They also argue that it threatens healthcare by potentially increasing the prices of medical drugs, as well as threatening jobs, the environment and workers' rights.
In January, around 5,000 activists staged a three-hour protest in Kuala Lumpur to oppose the government's plan to sign the agreement.
