A so-called "rock burst" reportedly killed two miners and trapped 31 others underground in a coal mine in the Russian Komi Republic on Thursday. The local Emergencies Ministry reported that 110 people were down the shaft at the time of the incident and 79 were brought to the surface, four of whom were injured.
The incident occurred when the miners were working 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) below the surface of the remote "Northern" mine in Vorkuta, about 2,000 kilometres (1240 miles) north east of Moscow.
Emergency teams established contact with those stranded underground and after gas concentration levels were measured, began the operation in the mine.
A rock burst happens when flexible rock underlies heavier less malleable layers leading to debris 'bursting' or 'exploding' under immense pressure at potentially fatal speeds.
