Switzerland's largest railway company, Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), began a two year trial period selling the digital currency Bitcoins at Zurich Hauptbahnhof, Friday. The programme is set to be implemented in thousands of kiosks at numerous stations across Switzerland.
Reto Schaerli, spokesperson for the SBB, said the company hoped to discover whether there was a market for Bitcoins over this period of time: "We provide ticket machines as a distribution channel, and we'll see how it works here in Switzerland."
He went on to explain the process of buying: "You have to have an app, you have to register yourself with a phone number, a mobile phone number on the ticket machine. And after that it's very quick and easy."
The Bitcoin is a digital currency which is not controlled by any particular bank. One Bitcoin is currently valued at €218.97 ($244.91).
