European Union ministers arrived for the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg City, on Thursday, to discuss the new measures in dealing with the refugee crisis.
Germany's Federal Minister for the Interior Thomas De Maiziere stated that Europe needed a new asylum system "to protect our borders, to receive refugees, to distribute refugees, to process them in other countries; also we need common rules for them to return", adding that he hoped the proposal would be "discussed and negotiated in full and as fast as the legal frameworks allow."
European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos noted that if the EU "had a common and effective [...] asylum system three years ago we wouldn't have lived [with] all these problems," but went on to add that the EU had "made progress"
The council will focus on the implementation of migration measures, specifically focusing on the situation in Italy and Greece, alongside the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal. In addition to that the ministers will also discuss the reform of the Common European Asylum System, the use of Frontex, and review IT measures on border management.
