A group of foreign tourists visited the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra on Wednesday, in what appears to be a growing trend with the state media reporting about several such tours in the past months. The visitors were filmed walking among the ruins and taking photographs.
The Syrian Arab Army recaptured Palmyra, known locally as Tadmour, from the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in March 2017. Militants destroyed large parts of the city including temples, statues and tower tombs.
The Syrian government is aiming to show that the site of global heritage is safe to visit despite occasional fighting in the area. Lebanese media reported that several IS militants were killed east of the city on Wednesday.
