Belgium's federal prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw identified Belgian brothers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui as two of the suicide bombers involved in Tuesday's deadly attacks during a press conference in Brussels, Wednesday.
Commenting on the attack on Brussels international airport, Leeuw said: "A picture showing the three suspects was spread. The one in the middle of the picture, one of the suicide bombers, was identified thanks to his fingerprints. It's Ibrahim El Bakraoui, born in Brussels on October 9, 1986, with Belgian nationality. The second suicide bomber on the left of the picture remains unidentified. The third suspect, with a clear jacket and carrying a hat, is on the run."
Discussing the attack on the Maelbeek metro station, the federal prosecutor noted: "The targeted underground train, which was at Maelbeek station, was going in the direction of the Art-Loi station. The explosion took place inside the second train, whilst it was still inside the station. The suicide bomber was identified thanks to his fingerprints. It concerns Khalid El Bakraoui, the brother of Ibrahim, born in Brussels on January 12, 1989, of Belgian nationality."
Belgian authorities have yet to identify the second suicide bomber involved in the airport attack, however police believe the third suspect, who fled the scene, to be 25-year-old Najim Laachraoui. A man hunt is currently underway for Laachraoui.
At least 31 people were killed and more than 250 injured in bomb attacks carried out on Brussels international airport and the Maelbeek metro station. The attacks occurred just four days after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in November's Paris attacks, was captured by Belgian police in Brussels. The so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks.
