A cascade of 100,000 poppy petals was released from the 50ft (15 metre) high Anderton Boat Lift in Northwich to mark the World War One centenary on Sunday, and to remember the waterway men who served during the conflict.
The Royal British Legion's petals were released from the Lift, known as the 'Cathedral of the Canals' because of its massive size, into the River Weaver by members of waterway staff and Canal and River Trust volunteers.
The Head of Museums at Canal and River Trust Graham Boxer explained the event, saying: "we feel that the boatmen who perhaps have been lost in what took place [during WWI fighting], and what happened, should be remembered by an event here in their cathedral, the cathedral of the canals."
Due to their nomadic lives, waterway workers were not official residents of towns and cities, so many were not included in memorial inscriptions following the war.
