17.07.2018
"The status quo in Libya cannot be sustained," UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame said, warning of potential "economic collapse" and "intense outbreaks of violence." He spoke via video conference from Tripoli during UN Security Council (UNSC) session in New York on Monday.
The head of the UN Support Mission in Libya argued that "the few who benefit from the status quo will, if left unchecked, do whatever they can to hinder elections."
He went on to say that "Libyans are demanding elections, and are becoming impatient with those who find multiple ways and means to postpone this moment."
Libya's rival political factions signed an agreement on the UN-backed presidential and parliamentary elections, set to be held on December 10.
The country has been in a state of political turmoil ever since the toppling of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
