Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Major-General Igor Konashenkov confirmed that an S-300 air defence missile system had been delivered to Syria, while speaking at a briefing in Moscow on Tuesday.
He explained that the system was designed "to ensure the safety of the [Russian] naval base in [the Syrian city of] Tartus and task force ships located in the coastal area, from the air" and underlined that it would be used only for protection. He added that a similar system had been placed aboard the Black Sea Fleet battleship 'Moscow.'
Konashenkov also took US White House spokesperson Josh Earnest to task for his recent critical comments about Russia, stating that the US had "failed all the ceasefire agreements and was not able to divide the so-called opposition from Jabhat-Al-Nusra" and had "allowed terrorists to regroup again and renew their supplies."
Konashenkov spoke about the current results of the Russian operation in Syria, commenting on what he described as the "hundreds of towns which are back living a normal life, [the] tens of thousands of square metres liberated from the terrorists and several tonnes of humanitarian aid [sent] for local residents."
