Chile: Thousands protest against TPP in Santiago

23.01.2016
More than 2000 activists marched through Santiago on Friday to protest against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement which Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is set to sign on February 4.
Protesters held signs with messages condemning the trade agreement and denouncing US agro-industrial giant Monsanto. Similar anti-TPP protests were held in various locations across Chile on Friday including in the cities of Iquique, Angol, Temuco and Villarrica.
The TPP is a proposed trade agreement concerning a variety of matters of economic policy. The deal is being negotiated between several Pacific Rim countries including Japan, Canada, Mexico and Australia and covers a variety of matters regarding economic policies, including trade barriers such as tariffs, intellectual property and environmental law. Protesters claim that TPP is anti-democratic and favours multinational corporations. They also argue that it threatens healthcare by potentially increasing the prices of medical drugs, as well as threatening jobs, the environment and workers' rights.
