A five-week-old polar bear cub has opened its eyes for the first time at the Berlin Zoo, as shown in footage released on Tuesday.
The mother of the cub is a polar bear by the name of Tonja, who after being paired in spring with polar bear Volodya, gave birth to her still unnamed cub on December 1.
The cameras installed inside the nesting cave caught the heartwarming moments, with the newborn snuggling with its mom.
Zoo officials are very pleased with the positive development of the baby. However, they note that the infant mortality rates for polar bears is exceptionally high - in the wild, approximately 85 percent of the newborns do not live for more than two years.
