A Brazilian court ordered the release of former President Michel Temer from jail on Tuesday, allowing him to leave the facility on Wednesday. The decision came less than a week after Temer was detained for a second time on corruption charges.
Temer was released from a military police facility in Sao Paulo on conditions that his assets will be freezed and his passport seized. His convoy was seen departing the compound in the direction of his home.
Temer has claimed unlawful detention and was therefore released under habeas corpus in order to appear in front of a court at a later date.
The 78-year-old Brazilian ex-leader is involved in an investigation into several cases of alleged corruption related to Operation Car Wash. On Thursday, Temer turned himself in to police after a court ordered his return to prison. Temer was first arrested in March but was freed on appeal five days later by a judge who argued that he did not pose a risk to the probe.
Temer, who came to power after leading the impeachment of his predecessor Dilma Rousseff in August 2016, rejects the accusations.
