Thousands rallied through Athens on Friday, after the Greek National Theatre decided to cancel a controversial play that was based on a script by far-left extremist Savvas Xiros.
"These are dangerous things; they bring us back in another era. We have to stop them from the beginning or they are going to burn us like crucified witches," said protester Yannis Androulidakis.
The decision to cancel all performances was made after conservative voices in the country, as well at the US embassy, accused the National Theatre of promoting "terrorist" ideas by performing the play.
In turn, protesters accused the theatre's administration of censorship, while carrying banners reading "No to the resurrection of Inquisition" and "Fear won't win," among others. An actor starring the play, who was among the protesters, slammed the US ambassador for a tweet he made earlier stating that the US is opposing the play.
