Greece: Nameless refugees buried at over-capacity Lesbos cemetery

Dozens of new graves bore headstones reading “Unknown” at the Agios Panteleimonas cemetery in Agios Panteleimonas on the Greek island of Lesbos, following the high numbers of refugee deaths in and around the island, Wednesday. The cemetery is reportedly being expanded because the site lacks space after the number of deaths has jumped dramatically over the last year. There are bodies from shipwrecks that reportedly date back to 2008 in the graveyard. Authorities began knocking down one of the site's walls last week to expand the space for the mounting number of bodies. With the island as one of Greece’s hotspots for receiving refugees, the south European state is one of the main entry points into the European Union for refugees from the Middle East and Africa who are fleeing violence, war and poverty.
