Former Secretary General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali passed away on Tuesday, after being admitted into hospital in Cairo. The Egyptian diplomat was 93.
As the secretary general between 1992 and 1996, Boutros-Ghali was the first and, as yet, the only head of the UN to come from the Middle East. Before taking his role at the UN, Boutros-Ghali worked as a member of the Egyptian parliament and subsequently became Egypt's minister of state for foreign affairs.
He presided over the turbulent years immediately after the Cold War. He famously opposed NATO's bombing campaign in Bosnia, but was also subject to criticism over the UN's failure to prevent a genocide in Rwanda.
On news of his passing, current UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon praised Boutros-Ghali's bravery and intellect. Speaking to journalists in New York, Ban Ki-moon said, "He showed courage in posing difficult questions to the member states and rightly insisted on the independence of his office and of the secretariat as a whole."
After the announcement of Boutros-Ghali's death, the Security Council held a minute's silence.
