27.12.2017
Dozens of vulnerable refugees who had been held in detention in Libya were evacuated to Italy, as footage released by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday shows.
On December 22 and 23, some 162 vulnerable refugees, including women and unaccompanied minors, were reportedly evacuated. Footage filmed in Tripoli on December 23 captured refugees boarding buses before they are taken to safety.
The evacuees had reportedly been held in what are believed to be inhumane conditions during their detention in Libya, with limited medical assistance.
Following their release from detention, refugees were to be transferred to Italian authorities, while being accompanied by the UNHCR staff. Upon arrival, refugees underwent medical checks and identification procedures before being transferred to reception centres.
