Justin Ownby, a farmer from Cleveland, Tennessee, didn't let his disappointment at being 90lbs (41kg) short of growing a 1,000lb (453kg) pumpkin get him down, and instead took to the waters in the oversized squash.
Ownby was spinning around in the enormous pumpkin on Monday as his family cheered him on from the side before he lost his balance and fell into the water.
He is still aiming to keep growing bigger pumpkins, and hopes next year to break his record.
The man is not the only person to use his pumpkin as a boat. The Windsor Pumpkin Regatta is an annual event held in Lake Pesaquid in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in which partakers sail half a mile (800m) in giant pumpkins.
