Hundreds of far-right activists, many of whom are members of the CasaPound Italy (CSI) movement, gathered in Milan on Friday to commemorate far-right figures who where murdered by left-wing paramilitary groups in the 1970s during the 'Years of Lead.'
Attendees held torches, while saluting and shouting "Present," when the speaker called out the names of the deceased. Among those commemorated were Italian Social Movement (MSI) members Sergio Ramelli, who was assassinated by a left-wing paramilitary group in front of his house in Milan on March 13, 1975, and Enrico Pedenovi, who was murdered while on his way to the commemoration ceremony for Ramelli.
The Years of Lead was a period of political turmoil in Italy that began in 1968 and ended in 1982. Scores of people were killed with many more left injured in a period marred by violence between left- and right-wing paramilitary groups, as well as government secret service units and mafia members.
