Tensions ran high as hundreds of protesters marched in Istanbul on Tuesday, to mark the third anniversary of the Gezi Park protests. Turkish police tightened security measures ahead of the rally to prevent possible clashes, with hundreds of security officers were deployed around Gezi Park, while the entrances to the adjacent Taksim Square was blocked with police barriers.
During the demonstration, activists commemorated the victims of the protests including 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who became the face of the movement after he was killed when he was struck by a tear-gas canister.
Beginning as a peaceful movement against urban development in the park, the Gezi Park protests erupted into nationwide unrest against current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government, who was Prime Minister at the time.
