France: Activists stamp barcodes on their bodies to protest meat industry

18.06.2016
Around 50 vegan and vegetarian activists gathered at St. Michel square in Paris, Saturday, to protest against the meat industry and to draw attention to animal suffering.
The protest coincided with the anniversary of Charles de Gaulle's 1940 call to resist the Nazi occupation, known as the 'Appeal of 18 June.' Protesters use the anniversary as a symbolic date to call for action against the meat trade, with one activist explaining that "we want to show that what happens each year to billions of animals on Earth does not differ so much to what happened in the death camps during WWII."
The protesters organised a performance, in which a group of activists lay in their underwear on the square with barcodes printed on their bodies, representing animals as products. Another group of activists held placards with the fictitious 'names' of animals, as if they were victims of war. The protest was organised by the 'Vegan Impact' group.
