France: National Assembly vote to revoke nationality of 'convicted terrorists'

10.02.2016
A controversial proposal to revoke nationality for French citizens who are convicted of so-called 'terrorist offences' was passed in France's National Assembly on Wednesday.
This was one of the measures brought in under France's state of emergency following the November attacks in Paris, in which 130 people died. However, the current proposal would enshrine the removal of nationality from militants within the French constitution.
Revoking French nationality from militants, under this proposal, would only apply to people who have dual nationality. The proposal garnered much controversy in French media and among French President Fracois Hollande's cabinet. In January, French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira resigned in protest to the bill.
The proposal was voted in with a considerable majority: 317 for, to 199 against.
