Cyprus' parliament approved a resolution calling for lifting of the anti-Russian sanctions, imposed by the European Union, in Nicosia, Thursday.
Secretary-General of Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Andros Kyprianou, contested Russia's alleged involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, noting "Russia is not to blame for the situation in Ukraine," adding that in his opinion the sanctions have not contributed to resolving the Ukraine conflict.
The politician also pointed out that the sanctions "have caused a lot of problems" for countries like Cyprus, which used to have good relations with Russia.
He urged the government of Cyprus and other EU member states to lift the sanctions against Russia and normalise relations, referring to it as their "duty" and claiming it necessary "in order to find a solution to the Ukrainian problem."
Earlier in the day, the European Council prolonged economic sanctions against Russia until January 31, 2017.
