German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the "elementary interest" for Europe in concluding its trade agreement TTIP with the US as she spoke at the German Employer's day in Berlin, Tuesday.
If Europe settles the deal, she said, it will decide on the trade standards with Northern America. However if not, "China and other Asian countries" will decide on it, she warned.
The German chancellor also criticized the German workers' unions, which are already raising a significant protest against TTIP. They would "rebuke us if we told them to daily and openly inform us about the status of their collective negotiations in the IG Metal or the IG BCE, so that we could openly comment what we think about it, after which they could continue on the next day. None of these would be true and it would never come to an end", Merkel said.
