Protesters rallied outside the office of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, Friday, to denounce the decision to restart the nuclear reactors at Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai nuclear power plant, Kagoshima prefecture.
The move is the latest in a series of restarts of Japanese nuclear reactors, many of which had been taken offline by authorities following the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster which resulted in a meltdown and the devastating release of radioactive materials.
Although local governments have consented to the restarts there are serious concerns expressed by nearby municipalities and residents over the safety of nuclear power in the case of a natural disaster such as an earthquake.
