A group of anti-Zionist protesters came to Times Square, New York, on Friday, for al-Quds Day, to express their support for Palestinian people and their opposition to the State of Israel. At the same time, dozens of Israeli supporters from the Jewish Defence League gathered for a counter-demonstration.
Israeli supporters came with the national flags and, despite their small number, were very vocal in their opposition to the pro-Palestine demonstration. Police officers were present at the protest, to limit the contact between the opposing groups.
At one point during the protest, a demonstrator of Palestinian descent spoke into a microphone about resettlement programmes in Israel. She said, "There are families that grew up in Brooklyn, that get subsidised to live in my homeland, when I even don't have the right to go back."
One of the Israeli supporters to turn up was Republican Congressman for New York's 10th District Philip Rosenthal. He called for countries to unite behind Israel, saying, “The United States and the entire world needs to understand that and unite with Israel, unite with Russia, Turkey and all the countries that are facing terrorism right now."
