Protesters marched through the streets of Port au Prince on Tuesday demanding French President Francois Hollande to reimburse Haiti for the debt France forced Haiti to pay in 1825 for property lost during the slave rebellion. Clashes broke out between protesters and police official's during Tuesday's demonstration, which was organised to coincide with the French president's first official visit to the former colony. Protesters set items on fire and tear gas was deployed was riot police. Among the hundreds of chanting protesters and heavy police presence, Hollande pledged to pay back the "moral debt" to the impoverished Carribbean nation and also said that France will invest in development projects in Haiti amounting to approximately $145 million (€130 million).
