Around 500 protesters marched through the streets of McKinney in Texas, Monday, before rallying outside Joyce Kelley Comstock Elementary School, after footage emerged on June 6 of a white police officer manhandling a black teenage girl before then pulling his gun on two male teenagers. Many of the protesters present at the rally believed the police officer to have used excessive force in detaining the girl, highlighting the wider issue of racism within the US police force. The incident, which took place on June 5, occurred at a teenage birthday party after police were called to the area following reports of an altercation. The video of the incident went viral on social media after being posted on YouTube on June 6. The police officer involved has since been identified as David Eric Casebolt. During the rally, protesters called on the government to provide sensitivity training for all US police officers. A number of protesters also carried signs with phrases decrying police brutality and racism such as "End Police Brutality" and "Black Lives Matter". An investigation into the incident is ongoing and the police officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
