So they would practice by carrying their own wives to make sure they could carry enough weight. It has become an international competition and Sunday River hosts the North American Championship."

SOT, Jerome Roehm, Winner: "The winning is always great but seeing we had no expectations coming here, we were just hoping to come out and have some fun. So that first run we came across people said 55! You're 10 seconds ahead of anybody else, I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it, because we were just out here to have a good time and then we ended up winning."

Couples raced through muddy obstacles and log hurdles for beer and cash in Newry, Maine on Saturday, as the town hosted the 20th annual North American Wife Carrying Championships
Footage shows men with their wives hanging upside-down behind them, while running down the hills, traversing the water obstacle, dubbed the "Widow Maker," as well as scaling the log hurdles, at the Sunday River Ski Resort.
Olivia Dowling and Jerome Roehm, a couple from Delaware, won this year's competition, beating out 44 other couples by finishing in under a minute.
"We had no expectations coming here, we were just hoping to come out and have some fun... I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it, because we were just out here to have a good time and then we ended up winning," Jerome said after their victory.
Following the tradition of the event, the winners took home cases of beer and a sum of money totalling five times Rowling's weight.
According to the event's Director of Communications Karolyn Castaldo, the contest is rooted in the legend of a gang of robbers who would train their strength by carrying their wives. She said: "It was based off a gang of robbers who would go to neighbouring villages and carry sacks of loot on their backs, back to their own village. So they would practice by carrying their own wives to make sure they could carry enough weight."
