US auction house Sotheby’s is due to place 187 works from a Picasso collection up for auction in London on February 5. Owned by Picasso’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso, much of the collection has yet to been seen in public.
"This collection has never been seen in public in its entirety, as it is here, so it is a great opportunity to see these drawings by Picasso," Georgina Gold, Director of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department at Sotheby’s, said in London on Thursday.
The collection, which features drawings as well as ceramics and sculptures, is expected to fetch in excess of £7 million (€9.21 million; $10 million), with individual pieces ranging in price from £6,000 (€7,900; $8,635) to £180,000 (€236,000; $259,000).
Among the artwork on display on Thursday, but not due for sale in the February 5 auction, is one of Picasso’s masterpieces, “Tete de femme.” It depicts Marie-Therese Walter - a mistress of the painter during the early 1930s. Tete de femme is estimated at £20 million (€26 million; $28 million).
