Several groups of Catalan independence sympathisers faced off with far-right pro-unity Espana 2000 protesters in the streets of Valencia, ahead of the October 1st referendum, Monday.
The pro-independence demonstrators, many of whom waved anti-fascist flags, mobilised with the objective of 'respecting the right of Catalan people to decide' as well as opposing the 'repressive Spanish government', whereas Espana 2000 protesters burnt Catalan flags and chanted 'Catalan terrorists'.
"We came here to protest because when the government tolerates the kind of things they're doing, when they don't remedy the situation, when the force of reason is lacking, people will reason with force," said Jose Luis Roberto, the Espana 2000 leader.
There were several scuffles between the groups forcing authorities to deploy extra police officers.
