Poland: Thousands attend pro-choice rally in Warsaw

Thousands of protesters gathered in Warsaw to denounce the Polish parliament's rejection of a proposed bill to allow abortion until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy. The protest which was partly organised by former MP Barbara Nowacka was held in front of the Polish parliament building.
Addressing the crowd, Nowacka stated "This is contempt. It all strikes in our freedom. In a country where there's contempt, we can't even dream about freedom, about social justice or economic equality."
The protest was galvanised by the news that a draft bill banning abortion in all cases except if the mother’s life is endangered, has been promoted for additional consideration in parliament. This draft bill is reportedly supported by the country's Catholic church.
At present time, abortion in Poland is allowed only if the pregnancy occurred as a consequence of rape, incest or if there are potential medical complications for the mother or infant.
