Hundreds of supporters of the late Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos rallied outside the Supreme Court in Manila, Monday, one day ahead of a court ruling on whether to permit the leader a state burial.
The crowd were addressed by Marcos’ daughter and current governor of Ilocos Norte, Imee Marcos, who said “It is right that President Ferdinand Marcos be buried.” The governor continued, quoting the Pope and urging forgiveness for her father.
Current President of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte announced his decision to transport the body of Marcos from his hometown of Ilocos Norte and bury it at the National Heroes' Cemetery in Manila. Recently, thousands of people came to the street to protest against the proposal and called Duterte to review his decision. The demonstrators also appealed to the Supreme Court with the petition, signed by 30,000 people, which claimed that his burial would offend the memory of those who had suffered during his regime.
Marcos was ousted in 1986 by a revolt and died in Hawaii three years later. Since his ousting his wife and two children have been elected to public office.
